How to Install Wall Cabinets with Studs: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing wall cabinets yourself can be a rewarding weekend project — but like any quality cabinetry job, the results depend heavily on preparation. This guide walks you through every step, from locating your studs to driving in that final fixing screw.

Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you touch a single cabinet, take the time to assemble everything you'll need. Rushing to the hardware store mid-installation is frustrating at best and costly at worst. Here's what to have on hand before you begin.

Essential tools for the job:

  • Stud finder — the single most important tool for this project. A quality electronic stud finder will accurately locate the timber framing hidden inside your wall structure.
  • Drill and drill bits — a cordless drill with both a driver bit and a 4–5 mm timber bit is ideal.
  • Spirit level — a 1.2 m level is strongly recommended to keep your run of cabinets perfectly plumb and aligned.
  • Tape measure and pencil — for marking stud positions and cabinet layout lines.
  • Screwdriver — both Phillips head and flathead.
  • Clamps — useful for holding cabinets flush against each other while you drive fixings.
  • Ledger board — a straight length of timber temporarily screwed to the wall to support cabinet weight during installation.

Materials you'll need:

  • Structural screws (75–90 mm) for fixing into studs
  • Cabinet joining screws or bolts
  • Wall anchors or cavity fixings as a backup where studs aren't accessible
  • Shims for levelling uneven walls

If you're working with custom cabinetry — the kind designed and built to your exact specifications — your installer will typically supply all necessary fixings. For a DIY job, investing in quality fasteners is non-negotiable. A cabinet fixed properly into solid framing will outlast one poorly anchored into plasterboard every single time.

Locate and Mark the Wall Studs

Before a single cabinet goes up, you need to know exactly where your wall studs are. Wall cabinets are heavy — even before you load them with plates, glasses, or pantry items — and they must be anchored into solid timber framing, not just the plasterboard. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons cabinets fail or pull away from the wall over time.

In most Australian homes, wall studs are spaced either 450mm or 600mm apart from centre to centre. Here's how to find and mark them accurately:

  • Use an electronic stud finder: Run it slowly across the wall at the height where your cabinet rail or mounting screws will sit. Most stud finders beep or light up when they detect the edge of a stud — mark both edges, then find the centre.
  • Try the knock test: Tap along the wall with your knuckle. A hollow sound means plasterboard only; a denser, flatter sound indicates a stud behind it.
  • Check from a power point or light switch: These are almost always fixed to a stud. Measure out in 450mm or 600mm increments from there to estimate stud positions.
  • Confirm with a thin nail or drill: Once you've estimated a stud location, probe with a small nail to verify solid timber before marking your final positions.

Once you've confirmed each stud, use a long spirit level to draw a faint vertical pencil line down the wall at every stud location within your cabinet run. These lines become your reference points for driving screws during installation.

Pro tip: Mark your stud lines slightly higher than the finished cabinet position so the pencil marks remain visible as you work — you can erase or paint over them once the job is done. Taking ten minutes on this step properly will save you hours of frustration later.

Plan Your Cabinet Layout and Height

Before you touch a drill or drive a single screw, a solid layout plan will save you hours of frustration and costly mistakes. Getting your cabinet positioning right from the start is especially important in a Sydney kitchen, where bench space, splashback tiles, and rangehood clearances all need to work together as one cohesive design.

Start with the standard heights. In Australian kitchens, wall cabinets are typically installed so their base sits between 450mm and 500mm above the benchtop. This leaves a comfortable working zone while keeping the upper cabinets within easy reach. If your benchtop sits at the standard 900mm height, aim for the bottom of your wall cabinets to land around 1350mm–1400mm from the finished floor.

Use a long spirit level and a pencil to draw a clear horizontal reference line across the entire wall at this height. This line becomes your installation baseline — every cabinet will hang from it, so it must be perfectly level even if your floor or ceiling is not.

Map out your cabinet run horizontally as well:

  • Mark the centre of each stud along the reference line (you should have done this in the previous step)
  • Note the position of any windows, powerpoints, or rangehood ducting that cabinets must work around
  • Decide which cabinet goes in first — corner units or the largest central cabinet typically anchor the run
  • Account for any filler strips needed between cabinets and walls or adjacent appliances

Secure the Ledger Board and Hang the Cabinets

With your stud positions clearly marked and your layout lines snapped, the next step is fixing a ledger board along your bottom reference line. This temporary support — typically a straight length of 70 x 35 mm timber — acts as a shelf that holds the cabinet bases level while you drive in the fixing screws. It takes the weight off your arms and, more importantly, keeps everything perfectly aligned as you work across the wall.

To fix the ledger, drive screws into at least two studs, checking it is dead level with your spirit level before fully tightening. Once it's solid, rest your first cabinet on it and push it snugly against the wall.

Hanging the cabinets themselves follows a straightforward sequence:

  • Pre-drill the hanging rail or cabinet back at the points that align with your marked studs — typically two fixing points per stud, one near the top and one near the bottom of the cabinet.
  • Drive 75 mm (3-inch) coarse-thread screws through the cabinet and into the stud. Avoid drywall anchors for wall cabinets carrying any real load — stud fixings are non-negotiable for safety.
  • Check for plumb and level after each cabinet goes up, using a spirit level on both the face and the side. Make small adjustments before fully tightening.
  • Clamp adjacent cabinets together at the face frames before screwing them to one another, ensuring a flush, gap-free join across the run.

Work from one end of the wall to the other, hanging cabinet by cabinet along the ledger. Once the entire run is secured and verified level, remove the ledger board and patch the screw holes it leaves behind.

Getting this stage right is where DIY results either look professional or fall short. If you are ever uncertain about stud spacing, wall construction, or load capacity, it is worth having an experienced cabinetmaker assess the wall before you commit.

Level and Fasten Cabinets to the Studs

With your ledger board in place and stud positions clearly marked, you're ready for the most critical step: getting each cabinet perfectly level and driving fasteners securely into solid timber. This stage determines whether your finished kitchen looks and functions the way it should for years to come.

Lift the first cabinet into position, resting it on the ledger board. Hold a spirit level across the base and face of the cabinet, adjusting as needed with timber shims. Once you're satisfied the cabinet sits plumb and level in every direction, clamp it temporarily to the wall or have a second person hold it steady.

Drive two 75 mm coarse-thread cabinet screws through the hanging rail at the back of the cabinet, angling slightly upward into the centre of each stud. Do not fully tighten yet — you'll need to align adjacent cabinets first. For each subsequent cabinet, clamp the face frames together using cabinet clamps to ensure the fronts sit perfectly flush, then fasten to the studs in the same way.

Once all cabinets are hung and aligned, go back and fully tighten every screw. Check your level again after tightening, as this can sometimes shift things slightly. Remove shims or trim them flush with a utility knife. Key points to keep in mind:

  • Use at least two screws per stud on each cabinet for maximum load-bearing strength
  • Never rely on plasterboard alone — every fastener must hit solid timber
  • Check level front-to-back and side-to-side before fully committing each cabinet
  • Clamp adjacent cabinets together before fastening to keep faces aligned
